Spring Pond Farm
Berlin, MA
The surrounding native and agricultural landscape of this 30-acre property helped inform the direction of the landscape design associated with the renovation of an 1887 farmhouse. The property is defined by a large, centrally located swimming and fishing pond, and the renovations to the home and landscape were designed to take full advantage of this picturesque resource.
A new driveway was designed to take advantage of the rolling front terrain, and new plantings of Oak, Maple, and Cedar trees were planted along its length to tie into the surrounding native forest. Large swaths of ferns and native grasses provide a textural ground cover and build upon the preserved areas of native woodland groundcovers along the property perimeter.
The exterior terrace with sweeping views of the pond is composed of locally sourced large irregular stones and provides a beautiful setting for family meals and relaxation around the large fire pit. A new barn for both function and entertaining was sited on the property to maximize views out to the pond and the adjacent open field for deep vistas into the property. An enclosed working garden was designed as an extension of the barn and provides ample growing space for vegetables and flowers. The new pier is the ideal place for afternoon fishing and sitting out over the water.
