Rosemary Beach
Rosemary Beach, FL
Our design principles proved decisive in shaping a landscape-forward identity for this New Urbanist project along the sparsely vegetated Florida Panhandle coast.
Today, majestic sand live oaks and lively public greenspaces are celebrated for engendering a distinctive, idiomatic sense of place. Our choice of native species over nursery exotics and spindly palms was trailblazing, as was the emphasis on walkability over cars.
Detailed landscape designs fleshed out a master plan that grouped 480 residences densely along mid-block boardwalks. These spines lead to the town square, smaller town greens, an expansive civic park, street trees, and low-environmental impact walkovers to the beach – all our work.
Three plant choices were crucial: 1) native sand live oaks to structure public spaces and corridors; 2) exclusive use of native/local plants (palmetto, rosemary) to complement the trees; 3) manicured lawns to signify public gathering areas.
Our design decisions have met the tests of time and real-world use: sand live oaks are the town’s cherished icons while amongst them, residents eagerly embrace the lush communal spaces.
