Cliff Head

Cape Neddick, ME

Project Description

We sited this new home and organized the landscape to relate to a dramatic coastal ledge. The landscape design features a tiered sequence of spaces defined by linear stonewalls. Stone walks and terraces, like the walls, recall the parallel strata of the natural rock outcrops. Breaking the pattern, a weir-edge pool extends over the edge of the rocks at an oblique angle to the slope, creating a dynamic counterpoint. The pool surface melds with the blue ocean beyond, creating the illusion that the ocean flows into the stone terrace. Walls, within the landscape and at the house, are constructed of stone excavated from the site, further anchoring the design to this unique shoreline terrain.
