This landscape carves intriguing spaces from the rocky terrain and woods that surround a new house designed in a contemporary style. Because the property abuts a historic district, we gave careful consideration to screening, both to protect the owners’ privacy and to create a sense that the house was nestled into a wooded ledge. A driveway winds through the rolling terrain descending to the house, which sits on one of a stepped series of stone-framed terraces. We defined courtyards, terraces, and gardens with a crisp geometry that relates to the architecture and contrasts with the rough outcrops of ledge that give the land its unique character.
